In San Antonio for a week with our daughter and son-in-law to see our grandson graduate from JBSA Lackland, BMT. Seems like we ate Mexican every day. On this final day we were looking for anything but Mexican. That proved to be tough so ended up finding Gilberts on a Google search and was a short drive. Its in a short strip mall and drove past twice before recognizing it for what it was. Walked in and found a very attractive and clean dining area. The walls were covered in photos from throughout the restaurants history which were fascinating to look at. I ordered the Beef Enchilada Plate. It was awesome. Came with re-fried beans, one enchilada, Spanish rice and two tortillas. The food was hot and flavors were all very fresh. The tortillas were clearly very fresh and very hot. The enchiladas had chunks of beef as well as ground beef. All meat was properly prepared, hot and very flavorful. Our server was excellent as well! (A former husker but back from Nebraska to San Antonio.) We showed up less than an hour before closing time so expected it to be a little bit rushed....not true at all. Our server was very pleasant and patient with us while we made out choices. She had an excellent grasp of the menu and handled our requests for additional items very quickly. We never felt rushed at all. Half way through the meal we all realized it was hands down the best Mexican food we had during our stay in San Antonio. We're from the Kansas side of Kansas City and feel KC has the best barbecue in the nation. However, San Antonio clearly is way ahead in Mexican food. Very highly recommend it!

We were looking for something different to try from our daily norm and today is our 3rd day back. The breakfast is amazing and today was the first time trying out their lunch. Amazing experience from the moment your order is taken until you are scraping your plate clean. Delicious food and amazing staff.

Damn if you are from San Antonio and don't frequently come to eat at Gilbert's.... Seriously? You're missing out. My family came to visit from Brownsville, Tx and damn this meal is delicious....non of these taco replica stuff. This is the real deal and from a chefs experience it's delicious. Out of towners you need to have a taste of Gilbert's restaurant. Memorabilia and satisfying music. Can't beat that.

I ordered a Javeh Special (2 carne gasda enchiladas) rice & beans. Chips & salsa, drink. Forgot to take pictures. It was delicious, hot and tasty. Great customer service Jada was our waitress, very sweet and kind. Devin the manager on duty is always kind, very helpful and great service up front. The atmosphere was very pleasant and clean. Been there 3 times this week and I'll be back. Next time pictures.
